2008-10-09 Veterán Holyfield vyzve k souboji o titul Valujeva
Pětačtyřicetiletý americký boxer Evander Holyfield by měl být vyzyvatelem ruského obra Nikolaje Valujeva v souboji o titul mistra světa v těžké váze organizace WBA. Zápas se má uskutečnit 20. prosince v Německu nebo Švýcarsku.
Bývalý čtyřnásobný světový šampion Holyfield, který 19. října oslaví 46. narozeniny, by se v případě vítězství nad 213 centimetrů vysokým Valujevem stal nejstarším mistrem světa v historii. Tento primát drží jiný slavný Američan George Foreman, který v roce 1994 ve svých 45 letech porazil krajana Michaela Moorera.
Holyfield dostal nabídku utkat se s Valujevem od promotéra zápasu Wilfrieda Sauerlanda a je připraven ji přijmout. "Můj právník to zkoumá. Když bude všechno klapat, půjdu do toho," řekl televizní stanici ESPN.
Z poznámek o svém věku si nic nedělá. "Říkali mi, že jsem starý, už když mi bylo 34 a chystal jsem se boxovat s Mikem Tysonem. To není nic nového, ale cítím velkou touhu a připravím se tak, abych byl v nejlepší formě," uvedl Holyfield.
Naposledy boxoval loni v říjnu, kdy v Moskvě podlehl domácímu Sultanu Ibragimovovi v souboji o titul organizace WBO. Během své kariéry absolvoval 53 zápasů mezi profesionály, z nichž 42 vyhrál a devětkrát odešel poražen.
K dalšímu návratu do ringu ho ženou i dluhy, kvůli kterým v létě přišel o svou rezidenci se 109 pokoji v Atlantě. Za duel s Valujevem byl měl podle ESPN inkasovat méně než 750 tisíc dolarů. "Je to nejmenší částka, za kterou jsem kdy boxoval o titul, ale jsem rád za tu příležitost," uvedl.

I believe Bobby has the ability to fight against the best fighters in the world and this fight will test that prediction.”
UFC and Affliction veteran Mike Whitehead, 23-7, will headline the show in the main event super bout. Whitehead is a 3 time All American Wrestler from the University of Missouri. Whitehead first jumped onto the MMA scene by appearing on the Spike TV reality series "The Ultimate Fighter", Whitehead has parlayed that notoriety into MMA success. With wins over some big names in the heavyweight division, Whitehead has shown himself to be an up-and-coming star in MMA. “Mike Whitehead has come home to Missouri to fight in the M-1 Challenge," said Kelly. "This is an exciting opportunity for the fight fans here to not only see a true MMA superstar like Mike Whitehead in action but also all of this amazing international talent in one place.” |

Tak nakonec to vypadá, že Ken Shamrock se se svým adoptivním bratrem Frankem opravdu popere a to někdy příští rok...

For what it's worth, neither man has had a banner 2008. Frank lost his Strikeforce Middleweight Championship to Cung Le in March, when one of Le's high kicks broke Frank's forearm. He has not competed since that bout. Ken lost his only bout of 2008 to Robert "Buzz" Berry in Cage Rage in a first-round TKO.
With Frank on board, older brother Ken seems just as ready to throwdown and attempt to gain some redemption in the eyes of the MMA world based on his comments;
“Will the fight happen? Absolutely. He’s got a buttkicking coming to him. Everything I’ve learned, everything I have bottled up in me, is going to come out on him. I’ve still got love for Frank, but I’m angry at him. He feels he’s better than me, but I always spanked him in the gym. Now he wants to show me. I figured he’d wait until I was 50 years old, but I guess he’s waiting until I turn 45.”
This sounds exactly like the same thing that Ken said about Tito Ortiz before Ortiz managed to beat him on three successive occasions, so it will be interesting to see if he's got anything in store for Frank other than the same techniques he's been using since the primitive days of MMA.
In a twist on this story, FiveOuncesofPain.com is reporting that the fight would likely be scheduled as a Pay-Per-View broadcast as the fight would be considered too big for Showtime. That would leave CBS as an option, but a source at CBS has apparently stated that they have no interest in promoting a fight featuring Ken Shamrock after the debacle that ensued earlier this month. |
